Fearless Friend- Jamie Kerstetter
This week's fearless friend comes from my friend, Jamie, who has a very typical job career story: graduate college, go to law school, graduate law school, become an attorney, quit being an attorney, START BEING A PROFESSIONAL POKER PLAYER. Yeah, Jamie's pretty awesome.
She's building a name for herself on the poker circuit, playing in the World Series of Poker regularly, and finishing really high up in the standings. Not only is Jamie totally fearless for scrapping lawyerhood to do something she loves, but she's breaking all sorts of barriers being a successful woman in the poker scene. And with that, here is her interview:
How do you know Chewbacca's Mom?
ChewMama and I were pretty much law school besties from the start. We bonded over Wendy's frosties and fake study sessions, hung out in phonebooths and reenacted some Shakespeare scenes in our spare time.
What are you doing for work now? What did you do before?
I'm a professional poker player sponsored by PartyPoker. I used to be a tax attorney, so you know, pretty much a natural career progression...
How did you get started doing your current career?
I played poker in college and started playing a lot more at U of M against law students. Beating really smart kids at poker made me love the game and become more serious about improving.
Any advice for people chasing their dreams?
If it wasn't already an annoying cliche, I'd probably say something along the lines of YOLO. But really, you get one life. If you dread every single Monday and want to hit fast forward to every Friday, something is really wrong. At least try to have the life you want, and take some chances. Make your life exciting and scary.
What are you most afraid of?
Make a decision to relinquish the need to control, the need to be approved, and the need to judge. -Deepak Chopra
Brittney Spears or Celine Dion?
That's like asking if I like cotton candy or steak more. Depends on the mood, but they can each have a spot on my ipod.
Koalas or Pandas?
What makes you feel fearless?
Having already tried and failed at a lot of stuff in life, and realizing I still have endless hope and optimism to keep trying.
And now for some pictures!
Here's Jamie looking very serious and fearsome at the table.
But this is what I supsect Jamie is mostly like while playing poker: looking like Princess Leah.
This was Jamie and I at a Michigan vs. Ohio State Game. It was freezing and we lost. We try not to talk about the loss and instead focus on our contraband irish coffees.
And here's Jamie and I in front of a Hippo in New York City, because why not?
